David Maloni is Principal for American Restaurant Association Inc., a food commodity research, forecasting, consulting, and contract risk management organization founded in 1996 specifically advising the US restaurant and hotel industry and supply chain. American Restaurant Association also specializes in assisting restaurant and hotel companies navigate and contract in the volatile food commodity markets through its two sister firms ARA Trading and ARA Hedging. ARA Trading is a licensed Commodity Trading Advisory Firm (CTA) specifically directed to the US hotel/restaurant industry for commodity risk management consulting. The coffee market has been trading at 13 year highs as of late around $2.30 a bushel.  Chart models are suggesting the next step for the coffee market may be $2.75.

Crude Oil and the Economy

 I noticed recently that gasoline prices in our neck of the woods are nearing $3 a gallon.  And it’s likely that we will surpass $3 in the coming weeks due to the recent run up in crude oil.  It surprises me that I haven’t heard more push back on the elevated gasoline prices and their potential draw on the US consumer.

This model gives us an indication of hog farmer profitability which, as one can tell, has declined sharply in recent months.  If I included charts for chicken producers, milk farmers and various other protein producers they would be similar.
