Wal-Mart to cut prices on 16,000 items | www.indystar.com
There is no doubt that Wal Mart is one of the greatest retailers in the world and like all companies there are life stages that all companies go through. When Sam Walton started the company, he developed in areas where the rest of the discount power houses at that time did not exist . As the company grew, he slowly invaded the territory of many of the weaker and poorly operated retailers knocking out many of the retailers that could not compete on price. Wal Mart develop the lowest cost of distribution in the industry and was able to force out the competition with lower pricing. Wal Mart now is in a new time, where store development has placed them through out the enitre market and more impotantly the remaining competition learned how to deal with their price only stratedgy.

Macy's stock surges on report of KKR buyout bid | www.newsday.com

Sears Kmart Will Go the Way of Woolworth, Zayre, Service Merchandise, and Gimbels

COMPANY NEWS; MANAGEMENT-LED GROUP TO BUY PETCO FOR $505 MILLION | query.nytimes.com
Lampert and his team bought an aging giant who needed a complete marketing make over. While the Lampert team did a great job in finding ways to increase cash, they did nothing to bring the customers back into the doors. The consumer has no reason to shop either the Kmart or the Sears Stores as they have done nothing to the merchandise mix, store display, and customer service. In the meantime their competition has taken away their core business and customers and will continue to do so. While Target and Wal mart will continue to destroy Kmart at the discount level, Lowes Home Depot and JC Penney will continue to take away the core Sears customer.
