Council Member Biography

Ed Lawrence is Managing Associate at Auriemma Consulting Group. He joined Auriemma in 2004 and brings over 25 years of experience in all aspects of the credit and debit card arena with previous experience in both a banking and consulting capacity. Previously, Mr. Lawrence was Senior Vice President at Valley National Bank; he was at the firm for 9 years. In addition, Mr. Lawrence held senior executive positions over a 15-year tenure at Eastern States Bancard Association, now First Data, the world’s largest processor of credit card transactions. Mr. Lawrence has launched successful co-branded credit and debit card programs, converted portfolios between processors, and sold both merchant and credit card portfolios. His senior roles at both these firms spanned the portfolio management, technology, and human resources functions. (This is me - Update Profile)

Do small issuers have a future in the American credit card market? The market has become ever more concentrated over the last decade, as economies of scale and consolidation within the banking industry have favored size. Today the top 3 issuers (Citi, Bank of America, and Chase) account for about 60% of bankcard receivables, up sharply from 1999 when the top 3 (which were then Citi, Bank One, and MBNA) had a collective 42% market share. Where does this leave small banks?
