Council Member Biography

Federico Cappuzzo, MD, is a Professor and Director of the Department of Medical Oncology at Ospedale Riuniti in Livorno, Italy. His main fields of interests include the treatment of lung cancer and colorectal cancer. Dr. Cappuzzo is involved in the development of new drugs such as irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitors for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), leading to over 50 publications in peer reviewed journals. He discovered one of the most relevant mechanisms responsible for sensitivity to erlotinib and gefitinib in NSCLC (EGFR FISH testing), as well as the mechanism responsible for sensitivity to cetuximab in colorectal cancer (EGFR FISH testing). Dr. Cappuzzo is involved in several translational research studies looking at the mechanisms of resistance and sensitivity to targeted therapy. He has been involved in numerous clinical trials for newly developed therapeutic agents including Avastin, cetuximab, sorafenib, sunitinib, and zactima. (This is me - Update Profile)

Erbitux Slightly Boosts Survival in Cancer Study | online.wsj.com

  The FLEX trial, a randomized phase 3 study comparing cisplatin-vinorelbine versus the same regimen plus cetuximab, recently showed that the addition of the monoclonal antibody to chemotherapy significantly prolong survival in chemonaive NSCLC. Several aspects could limit the wide use of cetuximab.
