Howard Scott, PhD, is Managing Partner of Cognyst Consulting LLC, a firm providing consulting services in the utilities and power generation industry. Dr. Scott is also Managing Director of the Howard A. Scott Group. He specializes in utility operations and technology. He actively consults with vendors and investors on strategic and marketing issues related to smart metering systems. Dr. Scott is the author of an extensive market study of the automatic meter reading (AMR) industry entitled “The Scott Report”, the most widely quoted authority on smart metering deployments in the world. Dr. Scott has a doctorate in physics. He has published numerous articles and frequently speaks at utility industry conferences. Dr. Scott has more than 12 years of experience working with Bell Labs and Bellcore, where he was responsible for developing innovative telecommunications technologies. His technical and business experiences include smart grids, automatic meter reading, telecommunications, project and business management, market research, and software development. The utility metering industry is going through rapid aggregation worldwide. The recent announcement of Itron (USA) buying Actaris (France) follows just a few months after the announcement of the Bayard Group's (Australia) acquisition of Cellnet (USA). Both Actaris and Bayard's Landis+Gyr unit have major market shares in the worldwide metering industry, and further acquisition by these companies and other large metering providers is inevitable.
