James Baum is President of James E. Baum and Associates, a consultancy focusing on the toy, mass market, and specialty retail industries. Mr. Baum has over 40 years of experience in the retail industry and is familiar with a wide range of toy related manufacturers, retailers, and categories. He was previously, President of Harmony Toy, a toy and games manufacturing company. Earlier, Mr. Baum was also President of Matchbox Toys, the $80 million company later acquired by Mattel, and President of Leisure Dynamics, a game and hobby company parts, which was acquired by Hasbro. He is a nationally recognized expert on the toy industry and is familiar with every major manufacturer, retailer, and licensor, including Mattel, Hasbro, Leapfrog, Jakks Pacific, Toys“R”Us, RC2 (Learning Curve), Spinmaster, Melissa and Doug, Lego, Megabrands, Walmart, Target, The Warehouse Clubs, Build-a-Bear Stores, Marvel, Lucas, Disney, Nickelodeon, HIT, and American Greetings. Wal-Mart and Target have put significant pressure on manufacturers for smaller case packs on their shelves to increase turns but have lower inventories in the stores.

Retailers expect the manufacturers to take all of the risks on toys and inventory control has become a key issue in the manufacturing sector.
