Council Member Biography

John Berg is Chief Technology Officer of American Semiconductor, Inc., which designs and fabricates low power, high performance ICs for military and aerospace applications. Mr. Berg has subject matter and business acumen around the entire semiconductor supply chain, including design, products, EDA tools, IP, front-end fabrication and capital equipment, back-end test and assembly and IC end-markets. At Cypress Semiconductor, he was Managing Director of the Programmable Logic Business Unit, which competed with Altera and Xilinx and was the foundation of the PSoC product line. Cypress acquired Sunpower during Mr. Berg's tenure, which allowed him to become knowledgable about the solar market. Mr. Berg worked at Zilog, where he was responsible for design and technology for the company's 8-bit and 32-bit micro controller business and DSP products. He has experience in semiconductor M&A and has been an expert witness for semiconductor IP and business litigation. (This is me - Update Profile)

Agilent Technologies Inc. agreed to acquire Varian Inc. for about $1.5 billion. This acquisition will expand Agilent's product portfolio in the industrial and life sciences markets and will give Agilent entry to the NMR, imaging, and vacuum technology fields. This is another major step in Agilent's evolution into a leading bioanalytical measurement company. One should expect the deal to be accretive in 2010, as Agilent estimates $75 million in cost savings from the deal.
