EDP’s acquisition of Horizon heats up wind energy’s M&A arena

April 2, 2007

Portugal's EDP to buy U.S. Horizon Wind Energy | today.reuters.com

With the global trend towards renewable energy, mergers and acquisitions have been significant in the wind turbine manufacturer arena, with the recent example the bidding war between AREVA and Suzlon Energy for REpower. But the M&A arena in wind energy is now extending beyond turbine manufacturers to project developers, as Energias de Portugal’s (EDP) acquisition of Horizon Energy demonstrates.

Siemens Offshore Wind Farm Projects a Sign of Things to Come

March 28, 2007

Siemens wins wind power deal | www.fin24.co.za

Siemens recent commitment to build two offshore wind parks in Britain reinforces that the German engineering company wants to be a part of the offshore sector of the wind industry. The offshore sector has not been completely successful, and many companies have either pulled out of projects or seen overruns in costs. But as demand for alternative energy escalates, and as onshore wind sites become more constrained in Northern Europe, the demand for offshore wind should grow.

Big Oil investments into wind energy point to maturity of industry

March 28, 2007

Two oil giants plunge into the wind business | www.boston.com

Oil companies BP and Shell both recently announced investments in the wind energy sector. The investments are more than a public relations ploy and show that the wind industry has come of age and is now perceived by the traditional energy sector as a viable investment opportunity. One interesting observation on BP and Shell’s wind energy investment is that they have taken different strategies, with Shell moving toward the offshore and European markets and BP focusing on the onshore market in the US.

Demand for Wind Energy Soaring as AREVA Counters for REpower

March 28, 2007

Areva counters Suzlon in bid for REpower | www.upi.com

AREVA’s counter bid against India-based Suzlon Energy, Ltd., for wind turbine maker REpower, may set off a bidding war that will echo beyond the acquisition of the small German company. Regardless of whether Suzlon counters, the rising price of the turbine manufacturer is a sign of wind energy’s rising demand and share of the energy market.

Rival Bids for REpower Could Signal Future Bidding Wars for Other Wind Turbine Manufacturers in a Market With Limited Acquisition Targets

February 26, 2007

Suzlon Counters Areva With EU1.02 Billion Repower Bid | www.bloomberg.com

The surprise $1.3 billion bid by Suzlon for Germany’s REpower could mean similar acquisition bids for small wind turbine manufacturers. The seemingly overpriced bid, which topped French nuclear power group Areva’s bid by 20 percent, could be a sign of things to come as major players strive to expand into and consolidate the wind turbine market.
