Council Member Biography

Jorge Fernandez is an independent consultant in the global water treatment industry. Until August of 2010, Mr. Fernandez was Principal of Water Think Tank (WTT), a consultancy company he co-founded, focused on growing water industry businesses globally. While at WTT, Mr. Fernandez worked with government and industry clients in the water industry on business strategies and programs for technology acquisition, product development, testing, certification and regulatory compliance, and sales and distribution of water systems. He has expertise in filtration membranes for drinking water and wastewater, filter design, ion exchange, and other treatment technologies and corresponding IP programs. Before WTT, Mr. Fernandez was President of the Water Treatment Business Unit at Pentair, Inc., operating in North America, Europe, India, and China. He started Pentair Inc.’s water business in China and its turnaround and growth in India and led the process for several of Pentair Inc.’s acquisitions. Mr. Fernandez holds an MBA from Stanford University and was also Governor of the US Water Quality Association. (This is me - Update Profile)

This article points to an area of the water industry that will continue to enjoy positive dynamics. For the investor, the message is simple: companies selling water infrastructure-related products and services, like large pipes, large valves, inspection and repair services, water pipeline engineering and construction, etc., the future has a strong upside. The current housing crisis may hurt some municipalities' ability to fund some of these projects. However, in most cases, delaying them is difficult or impossible, specially when water service to customers is at stake. Further, a new Washington administration in 2009 will look at rebuilding infrastructure as a strong potential avenue to re-energize the economy and create jobs.
