Joseph Bass, MD, PhD, is Kettering Professor and Chief of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine at Northwestern University. Dr. Bass oversees one of the largest research divisions within the department of medicine at Northwestern University, encompassing both clinical and preclinical programs. He also directs a research program in obesity, diabetes and lipid disease. Dr. Bass has expertise in treatment of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia. He is on scientific advisory boards for major biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies with a focus on obesity and diabetes drug discovery areas. (This is me - Update Profile)

Elixir has turned to a strategy devoid of innovation by selecting a combination glinide (metiglinide) plus glucophage for treatment of type 2 diabetes. With the new availability of DPP4 inhibitors (sitagliptin/alogliptin) and incretin agonists (eg byetta), what is the prospect of another K channel antagonist. The old problems likely will still appear: hypoglycemia, weight gain, and possibly progression of pancreatic failure/cell death.
