Council Member Biography

Lyle Berkowitz, MD, FACP, FHIMSS, is an active primary care physician with expertise in healthcare informatics and innovation. Dr. Berkowitz serves as Medical Director of IT & Innovation for Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group, Founder and Director of the Szollosi Healthcare Innovation Program and Chief Executive Officer of his consulting firm. His past experience includes work as Chief Medical Officer for two publicly traded companies and founder of various HIT startups. Dr. Berkowitz is a contributing author to the American College of Physicians' book 'Electronic Medical Records' and is writing a book on HIT Innovation. He is on the Editorial Board of Healthcare Informatics magazine, the Advisory Board of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems, and the Board of Directors for the American Health Information Management Association Foundation. In 2008, HealthLeaders magazine highlighted Dr. Berkowitz as one of “Twenty People Who Make Healthcare Better”. Since 2009, he's been listed as one of Healthspottr's “Future Health Top 100”, a list of top innovators in healthcare. In 2010, Dr. Berkowitz won Mayo Clinic's Center for Innovation's iSpot Competition for "Ideas that Will Transform Healthcare". In 2011, he was named one of Modern Healthcare's “Top 25 Clinical Informaticists". Dr. Berkowitz graduated with a Biomedical Engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania and is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Northwestern University.
