Council Member Biography

Michael Dobson is President of TeleMapics, LLC, a consultancy that provides advice on the uses of geographic information to technology and media based businesses focused on Geospatial Applications,Location Based Services,Local Search and Geographic Information Systems. Dr. Dobson's background includes experience as the CTO and EVP of Engineering for a high profile start-up in Location Based Services/Local Search using cellular and other wireless devices. In addition, he served as the Chief Technologist and Chief Cartographer at Rand McNally & Company, the world's largest map and geographic information publishing company, during their transition to digital information publishing and use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Previous to these positions, Dr. Dobson was an associate professor of Geography at the State University of New York at Albany where he researched and taught courses in mapping, GIS and geography. TomTom - TeleAtlas Not an Acquisition Target

This morning TomTom denied that it was it was in discussions to sell Tele Atlas, a publisher of navigable map databases that it acquired in 2008.  It is unlikely the TomTom is seeking an aquirer for Tele Atlas, but it may be shopping the entire company.

TomTom's potential acquisition of TeleAtlas has the capability of sending the Personal Navigation Market, the in-car navigation market and the online local search market into a frenzy of strategic activity. TomTom should be able to reduce its cost of goods and put considerable pricing pressure on other players in the PND Market.  In addition, it seems reasonable to assume that TomTom has the appetite to enter into other other verticals in the overall navigation market. Finally, the acquisition may put TomTom on a collision course with the giants of search (Yahoo, Google, MSN) for the Mobile Location Based Services Market.

In the short article that follows we briefly examine the crucial nature of search as it is a powerful driver of advertising revenue on the Web. We believe that Yahoo's revenue challenge is long term and related to the company’s seeming inability to compete with Google in search. We, also examine the hidden strategy behind Google’s potential acquisition of DoubleClick and conclude that the expansion of advertising formats and payout alternatives provided to advertisers may put Yahoo even further behind in the battle for revenues.
