Council Member Biography

Nataly Kelly is the Chief Research Officer at Common Sense Advisory, a market research firm specialized in business globalization and language services - interpreting, translation, and localization. She has worked in the telephone interpreting (over-the-phone interpretation) and translation industry for more than a decade, and is the author of a book on the subject. She has consulted widely on multilingual and multicultural business issues, including sales, marketing, quality assurance, product development, operations, and procurement. She is currently writing a dissertation on the role of language technologies and language policy in linguistically diverse societies and markets. Ms. Kelly is a certified court interpreter and an experienced translator and editor, and a former Fulbright scholar in sociolinguistics. (This is me - Update Profile)

Last week, more than 500 attendees flocked to balmy Barcelona for Localization World, a global conference devoted to the needs of those who make websites, software, and other products available in multiple languages. At the event, Common Sense Advisory hosted a colloquium that was attended by companies like Adobe, Disney, Oracle, RIM, Skype, and TripAdvisor, followed by a presentation on crowdsourced translation.

While the word “competition” always rears its head when discussing translation and interpreting, the reality is that this year’s top-ranked global LSPs do not all necessarily compete with each other. Some are military contractors, while others focus on commercial translation. Some are specialists in telephone interpreting, while others call localization their bread and butter. In 2011, the industry has grown, not just in size, but in diversity of specializations.
