Limestone Producer Franklin Industrial Minerals on the Selling Block
July 18, 2006
Franklin Industrial Minerals for sale | indmin.com
The industrial minerals industry has been well picked over for acquisitions and has undergone a major rationalization process over the past decade. In particular, the number of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) producers has been reduced to a few large international players that dominate the industry, in particular Imerys of France and Omya of Switzerland. These companies have production facilities in each of the major region of North America thus allowing them to offer national contracts to large consumers in paper, paint, plastics etc. (the modest price of GCC limits the distance it can be transported economically and thus limits it to a regional market). The recent acquisition binge has reduced to number of potential targets to a handful and so it is big news when even a second tier producer becomes available.
Franklin Industrial Minerals, a major producer of limestone as well as alumina trihydrate (ATH) and ball clay, is being offered for sale since the owner and chairman and chief executive, H. Rodes Hart, is in his 70s and has no other family members involved in the business.
