Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Unworkable in LTC

August 14, 2006

U.S. Seniors Navigating New Medicare Prescription Drug Plan: Some Beneficiaries Encounter Problems | www.medscape.com

The Med D Drug Program did not consider critical aspects of care for institutional elderly in LTC facilities.  We have now seen the correction of many of the initial problems with the Med D program, but it remains a major burden for LTC pharmacies as well as SNF staff and physicians.  CMS will need to step up and require that PDPs consider the special needs of the institutional elderly if they are to correct these problems and allow this program to work for these frail elderly recipients.

Novartis Heart Combo - Will PDP plans pay for combo?

June 9, 2006

Novartis Reports Two Heart Drugs Are Safe, Effective | online.wsj.com

I agree with previous authors about the potential benefit from the combination of valsartan and amlodipine.  Both are well proven medications with clear advantages.

This combination will be most beneficial to patients with resistent hypertension, such as the diabetic patients mentioned in the previous assessment.  Most of these target patients will be older long term hypertensive residents.

Therefore, one of the important question for Novartis may be whether or not these drugs will be covered by the new Medicare Part D prescription drug plans.
