Council Member Biography

Samuel Russ, PhD, is an Associate Professor at University of South Alabama, an academic institution. Previously, he was a Manager - Advanced Technology R&D at Scientific-Atlanta (Cisco) where he managed a hardware design group for cable DVR and non-DVR set-top boxes. He designed 4 set-tops including the industry-leading Explorer 8300, taking all four designs from paper to mass production. He also filed about 40 patent applications of which 17 have issued. He is experienced in home networking technology, hard disk drive (HDD) reliability and performance, development of point-of-sale retail terminals and machine-vision systems.
