Council Member Biography

Sunil Dhawan, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Stanford University. He has expertise in clinical dermatology including acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, skin cancer, onychomycosis, actinic keratosis, lasers, fillers, cosmetic dermatology, and managed care. Dr. Dhawan runs the clinical trial division in his group practice- The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, Inc, where he has performed over 60 trials for all the major pharmaceutical companies. He has consulted for companies such as Allergan, Obagi, Connetics, Galderma, Astellas, Medicis, Amgen, and Stiefel. Dr. Dhawan is on the governing board of the local physician run IPA, as well as the utilization committee of the largest IPA in the Silicon Valley. He has also been President of a local physician's organization and has served on several boards. (This is me - Update Profile)

This trial of Leo pharma's new Ak topical shows great promise. The results were positive, and further trials on non facial areas are ongoing. The advantage of this product is that treatment only requires 3 days, though the product can be irritating. Other products for actinic keratosis can also irritate. This will be the second product from Leo, to be released in 2012,as they will be marketing Taclonex as well, as of 2010. This is the beginning of a strong dermatology company in the US.

This trial showed predicatably good results for Enbrel in patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This included improvement in signs and symptoms and quality of life. This will increase sales of Enbrel in the short term. However the two newer agents, Humira and Stelara have better efficacy, and more convenient dosing regimens. Both will be doing similar studies.
