Broadly, a term used to describe an individual or entity charged with the responsibility of providing guidance and direction with finances. This activity typically ranges from basic items such as budgeting, credit management, and debt counseling to mortgage financing procurement, asset protection, and general financial planning. In most instances, the perception is that those utilizing this title have some degree of specialized training or licensure that would qualify them to provide services in a specific segment or area. In a contemporary sense, the term has been more widely used among insurance professionals that also offer securities as well as registered representatives employed by an NASD member firm. The term does not necessarily mean an individual is acting in fiduciary capacity unless they are licensed to act in such a capacity.
