Definition:

Coagulase negative staphylococci

Coagulase negative staphylococci refers to all staphylococci except Staphylococcus aureus. All people have coagulase negative staphylococci on their skin. In general this bacteria causes no problems to human health. However, coagulase negative staphylococci may cause disease in some situations. These include bloodstream infections related to vascular catheters and infections of prosthetic joints (for example, prosthetic hips or knees). Infections with coagulase negative staphylococci are typically treated with vancomycin.
