The Canadian pulp mills already face an unsatisfactory currency exchange (a number of forecasts years ago used a rate of .80/US$) and high energy, labor, chemical and transportation costs. Now, added to this is the slump in housing that has caused some sawmills to shut down for lack of business or because a 2 x 4" price of $214/thousand board feet is not profitable.
