The Billion Dollar Wild Salmon Industry Has Lost It's Salmon

September 4, 2009

Canada: Millions of Salmon Fail to Return | www.realtruth.org

Acidic water, ocean temperature change, sea lice and warmer river waters do not bode well for the return of the Canadian wild salmon. This poses a loss of 1.6 billion dollars to the industry. With some of the environmental issues spinning out of control, and out of the control of the fishery managers, certainly no quick fix is in site. Is it then crazy to even think about farmed salmon in Alaska, probably.

This issue will prove to be impossible to solve in the short term. It also will illustrate that overfishing will pale in comparison in it's effect.

Europe in a Bind Over Biotech Policy

August 24, 2009

EU stance on GM could decimate UK livestock production | www.farmersguardian.com

The EU's resistance to biotechnology is this year threatening to cause dire consequences for the EU's livestock and poultry industries. That is because regulators have found minute amounts of unapproved biotech corn events in soymeal made from U.S. soybeans. Under the EU's zero tolerance policy for unapproved biotech events this has forced the stoppage of about 200,000 mt of soymeal and effectively foreclosed the U.SD. as a source of soybeans and soymeal. That could be a disaster

These elements could be the early indicators that the farmed salmon industry, as we know it today, will be changing dramatically in the future.
