China: New-energy vehicle rules to come in March 2010 | www.automotiveworld.com
Since the introduction of the automobile in the late 1800’s, the internal combustion engine (ICE) has emerged as the dominant vehicle propulsion technology. However, at the end of the 19th century, it was the electric vehicle (EV) that actually outsold all other types of cars. In fact, the EV was introduced several decades earlier than ICE-powered cars. However, ICE eventually surpassed the EV due to its virtues of speed, power and range.

China Ends U.S.’s Reign as Largest Auto Market | www.bloombergs.com
In 2009, China easily surpassed the US in total car sales to become the world’s largest automotive market. China’s vehicle sales total of 13.6 million units was more than 3 million units ahead of the second largest market, the United States. The dramatic rise of China’s automotive industry, in terms of both consumer demand and production supply, is truly unprecedented in the history of the industrialized world. No country has risen from a nearly standing start to the size and scale that China has achieved in just a few decades.

Dutch automaker renews Saab bid | www.chicagotribune.com
Saab has been mismanaged under General Motors ownership. It hoped to capitalize on Saab's upscale European reputation and expand the Opel/Vauxhall product offering. This did not work. Later, GM tried to integrate the Saab products into its global vehicle architectures and powertrains. This undermined the unique product characteristics and alienated its loyal customers. Perhaps a non-automotive OEM can restore the Saab product line to its historical roots and make a success of the business.

Reality May Pinch China Auto Sales | online.wsj.com
The year 2009 was a year of tremendous historical significance to the China auto industry. The mature “triad” markets of North America, Western Europe, and Japan have led this decline. China is the noteworthy exception.
