Coming to Mobile: Add-Subsidized Content
April 13, 2007
Study says consumers may accept ads—in exchange for free content | www.rcrnews.com
· Advertising shapes most forms of media and communications
· The mobile phone has thus far been a personal, private device largely free from advertising
· The economics are quite compelling and it is a matter of time before advertising appears on mobile handsets
Handset subsidies and compelling applications key to mobile data

Americans ’06: 143 million handsets for $8.8 billion | www.rcrnews.com
· US mobile market is expanding (subscribers are up to 210 million with 143 million handsets sold in 2006)
· Mobile operators want to increase mobile data revenue, not just subscribers and handset sales
· Mobile handsets need to be subsidized, and compelling applications need to emerge, in order for mobile data to increase significantly
A Positive Move for Applied Materials

Applied to close Implant tool Biz | www.reed-electronics.com
Varian and Axcelis have long controlled the beamline-based implant market so this is no surprise. Applied's market share was relatively small by comparison and primarily within in the EU.
GCIB (Gas Cluster Ion Beams) and plasma immersion technologies are still largely in R/D. This could be a potentially better fix for Applied Materials' tool platforms if they were to decide to compete in this arena.
Smartphone competition is alive and well

3GSM 2007 - Introduces the new Samsung’s Ultra Smart F700 | mobizone.wordpress.com
Apple’s entrée into the Smartphone market has raised the bar for traditional handset manufacturers. There is now a significant competitor adding a fresh (non-mobile phone OEM / ODM) perspective to the mobile user experience. This can only benefit users in the long run.
Some key implications:
· Feature expansion
· Emphasis on the user experience
· Pricing will be an obstacle to mass adoption
Unlocking Phones Not Enough to Free Customers
January 29, 2007
Will 'unlocked' cellphones free consumers? | www.usatoday.com
- Unlocking phones is a positive step toward customer ‘freedom’
- The US market, however, is predicated on device subsidies and long-term contracts
- Until the subsidy-contract cycle is broken, unlocking phones will not have a significant impact

As Mobile ESPN falls, a Helio rises | money.cnn.com
With the closing of Mobile ESPN the industry is rethinking the MNVO value proposition.
At first glance MNVOs seemed like a welcome addition to the mobile landscape - well-branded companies delivering services that appeal to customer segments the large operators service poorly or outright neglect without the overhead of running a network. This is now under closer review.
Will Intermec Stay Out of the Pool?

RFID Consortium Names Patent-Pool Administrator | www.rfidjournal.com
• Intermec holds more Patents than some of the others but litigation can be expensive.
• The biggest challenge for Intermec will likely come from Symbol Technologies since they too hold several Patents.
• Intermec, is not currently a member of the RFID Consortium – it might be to their advance to join, but could dilute their claim on royalties if they do. On the other hand, having the 20-plus other companies against them might also diminish such a royalty claim power play.

Wi-Fi Carrier Potential is Misunderstood
July 27, 2006
Mobile operators face wi-fi challenge | technology.guardian.co.uk
The Carrier is more than a spectrum landlord.
Even if spectrum was suddenly limitless and free the existing carriers would still have significant scale and experience providing advantages over new wi-fi startups. An analysis of North American carrier cash cost per user (CCPU) proves this.
Wi-Fi can potentially free up spectrum for carriers.
If a carrier has a number of subscribers using wi-fi in their homes that leave excess spectrum capacity in the same geographic area.
Technology advances will overcome current limitations.
Yes battery life is an issue but it has improved 3x in the last year. Yes coverage has limitations and hand offs have been a challenge but the advances made by wi-fi and wimax vendors in the last year are encouraging.
