GM sees "Showdown" with Toyota on electric car | www.reuters.com
The dependence on foreign oil and the still debatable impact of vehicles on carbon contribution to the environment are both political realities that will drive automotive companies to develop alternative modes to propel vehicles. Whether this will be fuel cell hydrogen, partial to full hybrids, or plug in hybrids is not a decision that will be made in the next 5 to 10 years, it is simply too early to determine the true path. And the pitfalls are many for the proposed technologies without siginificant leaps in technological innovation and infrastructure decisions.
Is Volkswagen Ready to Pull the Trigger on A Second Entry to Manufacturing Entry In the US?

Volkswagen Eyes U.S. Plant Decision in '08 | www.reuters.com
In order to grow sales in the US, and to hedge against the Euro/Dollar Volkswagen will re-enter the American manufacturing arena. The possiblity is very strong that such a facility would be a flexible site capable of producing Volkswagen, Audi, and possibly Porsche product. With a strong supplier base in the American South, it is a good bet that the plant site would be in a location to take advantage of Tier One and Two suppliers already servicing the German and Asian transplants.
The Global Insight prediction is accurate, outside of the required investment.

Logistics providers increase focus on Mexico | www.purchasing.com
Operating cross border shipments is not as complicated or troublesome as some would suggest. What's needed is knowledge of US and Mexico Customs laws, a commitment to compliance, and understanding the distance specialized truckers like/want to travel. The question is: are you up for it or do your infrastructure constraints dictate handing it off?
Ship Order Secrecy Shifts Forecasting from Capacity to Performance
October 8, 2007
Ship order secrecy could tip supply and demand balance, says analyst | www.compairdata.com
Facing increased barriers to accessing new vessel building data, perhaps the maritime industry has awakened to the reality of their own achilles heal: why deliberately contribute to the ease of collecting data on global TEU operating capacity? Historically, new capacity implied reduced operating costs for the carrier, which strengthened the shippers' argument for flat or falling rates during contract negotiations. With more of the new capacities revealed closer to maiden voyage, advance planning in rate negotiations will have a bit smaller universe of factors to consider, something that could begin a potential shift away from traditional negotiation strategies on both sides of the table.

GM looks to substitute materials to reduce costs: Purchasing VP calls price increases "scary" and outlines upcoming plans | www.purchasing.com
To say that GM sees the next horizon of cost savings within commodity substitution only paints a narrow view of the larger issue facing GM, Ford and Chrysler. Forward reaching innovation of established and new components / composites, engineered for safety and reliability, are just one step needed for these 3 to survive, and is good for the global industry at large.

Turnaround management in industrial and automotive

CAN NARDELLI HELP CHRYSLER | wallstreetjournal.com
I think it is unfair to Label a CEO as "Six Sigma" management style, as a CEO has many management tools in his tool box, one of which is Six Sigma. A CEO is a leader with a vision for strategic initiatives and can assembele a team that buys-in and deliver results. I do not know Mr. Nardelli, However, I am certain tht he posses such qualities. What I am not sure of if Mr. Nardelli is a Turnaround/Change agent CEO. I say that because of his mix performance at Home Depot and his GE background that made apply these approaches to a retail company. GE Executives have not run a stand alone companies, tend to be cheer leaders with slogans and long term plans. One size does not fit all so to speak. What applies in one instant and environment, may not apply else,. So unless Mr. Nardelli takes off his GE hat and get to work in a practical and pragmatic way, then I am afraid that the writer of the article is correct and the turnaround will fail.
