HDD companies opt for more disks rather than higher areal densities

Seagate Technology introduced a 1.5 TB 2.5-inch external disk drive with 4 disks per drive. Earlier in 2010 Seagate and other companies introduced 3 TB 3.5-inch HDDs with 4 disks. These products represent an increase in component count per drive rather than HDD areal density and could accelerate demand for heads and disks. HDD companies appear to be looking at ways to increase product storage capacity --putting off production ramps of higher capacity components until 2011.

Will we see tablet computers with hard disk drives?

The current generation of the Apple iPad contains up to 64 GB of flash memory . Other tablet computer (slate) products are in design that also contain flash memory. Is 64 GB enough storage capacity, particularly for high definition movies that can be 3 GB in size or larger? A reasonable price for tablet computers makes it hard to include more than 64 GB of flash memory although 160 GB + of a small form factor HDD would cost much less. Could we see HDDs in new tablet computers?

New Intel processor chips will incorporate SAS controller

Intel introduced its new line of microprocessors for 2011 computer products at the 2010 IDF conference. Among the various components of its Sandy Bridge microprocessor line was one targeted for the enterprise server space code-named Romley. The Romley processor includes Intel’s Patsburg platform controller hub that supports serial attached SCSI (SAS). Motherboard controller support, including software RAID could pose a threat to independent SCSI controller suppliers

Recently there are reports that HGST is launching an IPO or seeking to be acquired

Seagate and Samsung to collaborate on enterprise SSD controller development

Seagate and Samsung announced that they will jointly develop and cross-license SSD controller technology for enterprise storage applications. Seagate is the highest volume manufacturer of enterprise HDDs while Samsung is the largest manufacturer of flash memory. The jointly developed controller is to be used in Seagate’s enterprise SSDs. Seagate joins Hitachi GST in seeking a partner in enterprise SSD development.

SanDisk introduced a 64 GB Solid State Drive (SSD) called an iSSD. The iSSD is a small Ball Grid Array (BGA) chip that can be soldered into a motherboard and used for digital storage in a computer system. The iSSD supports the SATA interface allowing it to respond to the rich storage command set of the SATA specification. An embedded SSD with a very small form factor may help to create new categories of computer devices and consumer products
