225% growth in HDD capital equipment spending between 2010 and 2015 is driven by unit demand increases, new technology introductions and updating facilities and processes. Annual unit shipments of over 1 B units per year likely by 2013. Introduction of heat assisted magnetic recording or patterned media will require new processes and capital equipment. Quite a bit of capital equipment for making HDD components is very old and a refresh of process equipment is expected over the next few years

Larger HDD Storage Capacities Coming

Samsung introduced a single surface 3.5-inch HDD with storage capacity of 320 GB. This implies about a 510 Gbpsi areal density, slightly less that about 530 Gbpsi being shipped on 2.5-inch HDDs. This would translate into a 2.5 TB 3.5-inch drive with four disks, eight surfaces. 3.5-inch HDDs with 3 to 4 TB storage capacity are expected later this year.
