Southern Co. nuclear reactor expansion project at Vogtle is not realistic

Southern Co. has received approval to expand its Vogtle, Georgia reactor plants by two new reactors each with 1,100 MW capacity.  The federal government will provide $8.3 billion in loan guarantees to jump-start the new reactor construction.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) released its trucking hours-of-service (HOS) regulation in response to a lawsuit agreement from the 2003 HOS Regulation limitations. The new rule will cost the most productive truck drivers in pay and logbook “gotchas,” cost trucking companies in productivity (profits) and cost shippers more. All of this is passed on to us consumers. The new rules take effect in mid-2013, but the 2003 Regulation-related lawsuit will most probably be reconstituted anyway.

Adams Fork Energy’s company Transgas, has contracted with Uhde, a ThyssenKrupp company, to build three 18,000 (bbl/d) coal to liquids (CTL) plants with an estimated project investment of $4 billion per plant.  The project uses the latest cutting edge Uhde gasification PDQ [Prenflow with quench] technology together with ExxonMobil’s methanol to gasoline process (MTL).
