Plenty of otherwise smart people seem to be rushing toward some type of application that involves cellphones (do they even call them that anymore?). If it’s on your agenda, I’d suggest you be careful.

TomTom and TeleAtlas - What Are the Strategic Implications?

July 25, 2007

TomTom Announces Intent to Acquire TeleAtlas | www.teleatlas.com

TomTom's potential acquisition of TeleAtlas has the capability of sending the Personal Navigation Market, the in-car navigation market and the online local search market into a frenzy of strategic activity. TomTom should be able to reduce its cost of goods and put considerable pricing pressure on other players in the PND Market.  In addition, it seems reasonable to assume that TomTom has the appetite to enter into other other verticals in the overall navigation market. Finally, the acquisition may put TomTom on a collision course with the giants of search (Yahoo, Google, MSN) for the Mobile Location Based Services Market.

What Should Yahoo! Actually DO?

June 25, 2007

Will Yahoo's board also get a makeover? | news.zdnet.co.uk

I and others have spoken of the need for morale boosting and a new vision/strategy at Yahoo! That’s much easier said than done and what does that actually even mean? I don’t have complete visibility on the company and only see parts of it — like the three blind men and the elephant. But here’s a little unsolicited advice for Yahoo! from where I sit.

Google Now a Phone Company?

Google To Acquire GrandCentral | www.techcrunch.com

TechCrunch is reporting a rumor — and it’s often correct in these — that the telephony “management” startup GrandCentral has been acquired by Google for $50 million. This is not Google as phone company per se, it’s Google as a system to manage calls on top of the existing telephony infrastructure.
