Luxury's Back! Uh, not so fast.

January 6, 2011

The recent string of positive comp-store sales reports and improved earnings releases have led many to conclude that the luxury business is both booming and fully recovered. While that may be in true in developing markets a closer look reveals that at least in the US, better does not mean good, and a recovery is still a ways off.

SUPERVALU Struggles to Sell Shaw's Chain | blogs.wsj.com

The reported attempts by SUEPRVALU to sell Shaw's should not be a surprise. The actual value of the chain is probably in the $700-800 million range and driven by the value of a group of 50-60 core stores.

Response to Frank Voisin's investment analysis of Skechers

December 17, 2010

Investment Analysis: Skechers U.S.A., Inc. | www.gurufocus.com

Mr. Voisin's analysis that Skechers is currently valued correctly by the market is an accurate one and may not even go far enough. I would further suggest that Skechers is poised for even further weakness for three reasons. First, Toning is mainly a fad which is on the way out. Second, Skechers current arrangements with their retailers will harm them in the future. Finally, Skechers inventory is not only heavy but drastically overvalued. For these reasons, Skechers is still a company to avoid.

Food Retail Formats for the Future

November 11, 2010

The customers of the future are likely to be more value-conscious, more ethnic, and more reliant on digital communications than those in the past. Many of the top 10 conventional chains around the country are currently experiencing negative or stagnant comp-store sales, are selling stores and exiting markets, and are not likely to be significant players in the future. Kroger and a few strong regional players are likely to dominate this segment of the market in the future. However, the retail food formats that will experience significant growth and success moving forward will be:Price-focused formats similar to WINCO and Shop RiteEthnic-focused stores similar to H-Mart and Grand MartTargeted-specialty stores similar to Trader Joes, Sprouts and SunflowerFoodie Superstores similar to Wegman’s and HEB’s Central Market.
