More indications of higher hard disk drive storage capacity in 2011

Hitachi’s New Hard Drive Paves the Way for 4 TB and 5 TB HDDs | www.xbitlabs.com
Hitachi GST introduced its Travelstar Z5K500 2.5-single disk HDD, offering up to 500 GB storage capacity. These drives are reported to have storage capacity areal densities of 636 Gbpsi. If applied to 2-3 disk 2.5-inch HDDs, up to 1.5 TB will be possible. If this areal density is used in 3.5-inch HDDs they could support about 1 TB per disk or up to 5 TB with 5-disks. This is further indication that 4 and even 5 TB HDDs will appear on the market in 2011
Enterprise 2.5-inch HDDs Exceed 1 Terabyte

Seagate Delivers First One Terabyte 2.5-inch Enterprise HDD | www.seagate.com
Seagate Technology introduced a 1 TB 2.5-inch disk drive for enterprise applications. This drive is available in both 6 Gbps SATA and SAS interfaces. 2.5-inch enterprise HDDs are becoming the most popular form factor. Smaller enterprise drives allow higher volumetric storage density for enterprise OEMs.
New Generation of High Capacity 3.5-inch Disk Drives
November 29, 2010
Seagate Technology and Western Digital introduced external HDDs with 3 TB storage capacity earlier this year. These 3 TB external HDDs had 5 disks and so were thicker than HDDs for desktop computers. 4-disk 3 TB drives have been introduced by WD that would fit into a desktop form factor. By 2011 we may see 4 Tb or larger external HDDs and 4-disk 3 TB drives from all the major 3.5-inch drive manufacturers.
On-line Video Could Swell the Need for Storage in the Cloud
November 28, 2010
US On-demand revenues projected to reach $10 B by 21014. NetFlix is offering lower cost streaming on-demand service. Electronic download will impact video disc sales and rentals. Cloud content access will drive demand for enterprise storage systems that support large content libraries and high quality content access.
is the opportunity for magnetic tape in the 21st century?
November 27, 2010
WW Market of Tape Cartridges Down 10% Quarterly | www.storagenewsletter.com
A combination of technology switches in half-inch magnetic tape and increasing use of hard disk drive arrays for long term storage of data caused a decline in tape shipments in the second half of 2010. The latest generation of LTO tape, LTO-5 increased in tape shipments while earlier generation products experienced lower shipments. AIT, DDS/DAT, DLT and QIC tape cartridges experienced overall declining sales in Q2 2010. Magnetic tape now plays a role as a low cost third tier and archive data storage technology. There are markets, such as media and entertainment, where the need for tape could undergo significant growth over the next few years.
Going Public and Going Private in the HDD Industry
November 27, 2010
Hitachi GST is working on completing an IPO, perhaps by the end of the year. Seagate is working with a set of investors to take the company private. 2010 has been an up and down year for HDD company stocks and shipments due to economic uncertainty. These moves in the HDD industry are driven by a number of factors.
HDD companies opt for more disks rather than higher areal densities

Seagate rolls out 1.5 TB external whopper | www.theregister.co.uk
Seagate Technology introduced a 1.5 TB 2.5-inch external disk drive with 4 disks per drive. Earlier in 2010 Seagate and other companies introduced 3 TB 3.5-inch HDDs with 4 disks. These products represent an increase in component count per drive rather than HDD areal density and could accelerate demand for heads and disks. HDD companies appear to be looking at ways to increase product storage capacity --putting off production ramps of higher capacity components until 2011.
Will we see tablet computers with hard disk drives?
September 20, 2010
The current generation of the Apple iPad contains up to 64 GB of flash memory . Other tablet computer (slate) products are in design that also contain flash memory. Is 64 GB enough storage capacity, particularly for high definition movies that can be 3 GB in size or larger? A reasonable price for tablet computers makes it hard to include more than 64 GB of flash memory although 160 GB + of a small form factor HDD would cost much less. Could we see HDDs in new tablet computers?
New Intel processor chips will incorporate SAS controller
September 19, 2010
Intel introduced its new line of microprocessors for 2011 computer products at the 2010 IDF conference. Among the various components of its Sandy Bridge microprocessor line was one targeted for the enterprise server space code-named Romley. The Romley processor includes Intel’s Patsburg platform controller hub that supports serial attached SCSI (SAS). Motherboard controller support, including software RAID could pose a threat to independent SCSI controller suppliers
we see a new Hard Disk Drive IPO or More Consolidation?

Hitachi Could Launch IPO for Hard-Drive Unit by Year End | blogs.barrons.com
Hitachi GST is a division of the bigger Hitachi company that focuses on making Hard Disk Drives and products using HDDs. HGST is the third largest HDD company after Western Digital and Seagate but its costs of manufacturing are believed to be higher than these other HDD companies. Recently there are reports that HGST is launching an IPO or seeking to be acquired
