Data is King: Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile Hasten Voice as Commodity in the Wireless World

March 4, 2008

Verizon Wireless Introduces New Unlimited Plans That Are as Worry Free as the Guarantee | biz.yahoo.com

With the decreasing value of voice through both mobile and landline phones, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile are all entering into a price war that places a decreasing value on voice.  They are also adding data onto their plans, and services such as Sprint TV, in the hopes of getting consumers attracted to their products.  The implications, though sometimes subtle, include a transition away from carriers, at the center of the wireless world.

Will Yahoo! be the Next AOL? A Look at the Suitors – News Corp, Microsoft, and Google

February 13, 2008

After Rejection by Yahoo, Microsoft Hints at a Fight | www.nytimes.com

Yahoo is in a good and a bad position.  The good position is that they have multiple suitors already -- Microsoft, News Corp, and Google (in a way) -- and might get more, driving up the offer price.  The bad news is that they've already seen AOL go down the road of a failed merger with Time Warner, and, if not careful, they could be the next.

AT&T is unlocked Apple iPhone 'scandal' loser; Apple will emerge comfortably

February 12, 2008

Millions of iPhones Go AWOL | www.businessweek.com

AT&T doesn't make a cent off of an unlocked Apple iPhone, but Apple makes a hefty profit.  Plus, they get distribution to untapped markets and can still claim that they tried to prevent it.  Apple is on a roll and will continue through the next iPhone release (provided it is not a bad release).

Google's domain tasting policy, though well meaning, is small potatoes

February 12, 2008

Google declares war on domain tasting? | www.imediaconnection.com

Google's domain tasting policy makes sense, but, predictably, it addresses a very small concern.  Click fraud and a complete lack of transparency are more vital, though this lack of transparency also vaulted Google over Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft.  In the vein of openness (OpenSocial, Android, etc), Google will inevitably have to cast more light on its opaque business processes.

GPS is worthwhile, but Garmin's Nuviphone won't impinge on Apple iPhone's Space

February 12, 2008

Who Dares Call Garmin's Nuviphone an iPhone-Killer? | blog.wired.com

Garmin's Nuviphone entrant shows that the incumbent manufacturers and carriers are continuing to lose their stature, in the wake of the Apple's iPhone.  However, Garmin has neither the brand power nor the expertise to pull off an iPhone.  We won't be able to predict success until we have much more information, as I detail in this article.

Review: Nokia E90 Communicator Acts Like a Laptop, Makes Calls Like a Phone | blog.wired.com

Nokia communicators reviewed in the US is important, we've missed the point for a while here, so coverage is cool. Seeding the enterprise driven smartphone market with a real device that bridges submini notebooks and high end phones is an important door opener/wedge to get business ready to support phones in a better way. ID isnt everything.  Its not a consumer device - clearly, but you dont use this to look good.

Blyk will have a challenging situation in the Netherlands; wholesale customer for Vodafone

January 30, 2008

Mobile Advertising: Blyk gets new funding; launches in second market | www.moconews.net

- The announcement of new funding by Blyk indicates some investors still see potential in Blyk, despite non-flying results in the UK - The announced deal with Vodafone NL is one of the first wholesale deals for Vodafone in the Netherlands in a crowded MVNO-market, where over 90% over MVNO's are on the KPN network - the planned launch of Blyk in the Netherlands will stimulate the Mobile Advertising market and the turn around of the business model.

It's the Interface, Stupid: iPhone's Safari Clobbers Microsoft and Nokia

January 28, 2008

Google Sees Surge in iPhone Traffic | www.nytimes.com

Manufacturers, carriers, and analysts completely underestimated the willingness of consumers to access the Internet over mobile devices and are still nay-saying the iPhone.  They're wrong, and the numbers prove it.

Google’s Android Appears (Near) Ready: Motorola, Microsoft Should Shake in their Boots

January 28, 2008

A Warm Welcome for Android | www.businessweek.com

I'm now excited about Google's Android.  Large-scale apps are being created, Motorola is hiring Android developers, scads of Android downloads are being reported ... and Microsoft is denying any problem.  All the signs for a good 2008 and 2009 and a hefty complement to Apple's iPhone.

RIM and Sprint: 2 companies sought pro-sumers. Guess who won?

January 22, 2008

RIM Shares Rise, No Sign of Slowing Down | www.wirelessweek.com

RIM and Nextel both faced a limited business-only marketplace and strategized a move into the consumer market.   When Sprint merged with Nextel, they made all the wrong choices to attack this marketplace, losing a huge opportunity to leverage a powerful business brand in Nextel.  RIM Blackberry, on the other hand, truly merged their offering into the pro-sumer space, eradicating any challenge from the merged company and facing it rather from Apple.
