When China joined the World Trade Organization in late 2001, it pledged to open its vast telecom market to foreign investment. Ten years later, the market has remained closed and static. China succeeded in tricking the world to its advantage;Kudos to the Middle Kingdom game master. What can we do now?
Will 2012 be a bad year for LTE in China?
January 18, 2012
It doesn’t look like 2012 will be LTE’s year for hitting the big time in China. More testing is needed, especially for terminals and chipsets, and China Mobile does not want to give the impression that LTE will replace TD-SCDMA, the ill-fated 3G service. Overall, LTE will become a test for China Mobile’s new strategy, as the operator is anxious to maintain growth.
December 28, 2011
Chinese mobile operators will face a tough year in 2012. Diminishing profit and increased government oversight and public scrutiny all look to be issues in a slowing economy. Furthermore, the industry’s momentum has leveled off. As the market continues to diversify, the three operators will head in somewhat different directions. China Mobile, which once dominated mobile service, is caught between a losing battle in 3G and an uncertain outlook for LTE. Its two main competitors are struggling in their own entanglements.

Handset payment (NFC) began in China with a great promise but it has turned to a muddle exacerbated by standard scuffles, security concerns, tensions between mobile operators and banks and a largely cash-based culture.
Is LTE a game-changer for China Mobile?
October 25, 2011
China Mobile (CMCC) is testing TD-LTE in six cities and the initial results appear good. However, the operator wants to run more tests before commercial service begins, especially for things like terminals (handsets and data cards) and bandwidth-demanding apps such as video and security. These preliminary stages can take longer than expected, given the large number of equipment vendors and terminals involved.
iPad sales sputtering in China
October 18, 2011
Apple recently began sales of iPad 2 in China, but the lukewarm reaction dampened the company’s hope to cash in on a huge consumer market. Why did a device that has taken the U.S. by storm lose its charm in China? The steep price is a major hurdle. The sticker price of almost 5,000 yuan ($785) is nearly two months pay for a white-collar worker. What else?
Huawei Turns to Enterprise Market, Again
September 14, 2011
Huawei Technologies, the second largest enterprise equipment maker worldwide (after Ericsson), says its enterprise business is showing “strong growth” this year. Midyear sales surpassed $1.5 billion and the company is on its way to a projected $4 billion for 2011, according to a senior executive for the division. Late last year, Enterprise Business Group was set up as a separate division, a sign of Huawei (re)turning to the sector.

It may be me as a restructuring and turnaround professional, as a telecom engineer, or someone who still has faith in Sprint but I think Sprint’s deal with LightSquared is a smart move.

I never liked the whole idea of Nextel and Sprint merging. I was sure Dan Hesse was going to dump Nextel when he first took over the reins of Sprint. However, the recession cam in 2008 and he rolled with the punches and embraced Nextel. He could not sell Nextel so he embraced it.
