Crumbling U.S. Water Infrastructure is an Investment Opportunity

US Water Pipelines Are Breaking | ap.google.com
This article points to an area of the water industry that will continue to enjoy positive dynamics. For the investor, the message is simple: companies selling water infrastructure-related products and services, like large pipes, large valves, inspection and repair services, water pipeline engineering and construction, etc., the future has a strong upside. The current housing crisis may hurt some municipalities' ability to fund some of these projects. However, in most cases, delaying them is difficult or impossible, specially when water service to customers is at stake. Further, a new Washington administration in 2009 will look at rebuilding infrastructure as a strong potential avenue to re-energize the economy and create jobs.

Alaska can export LNG to Pacific Rim | today.reuters.com
Liquefaction and pipelines in Alaska address the local desires to keep revenues and jobs in Alaska. Building a pipeline to somewhere in the south, like Valdez is very possible. ROW (Rights of Way, pipeline corridor) are already permitted and mostly available, and the access is available. Knocking off 1,350 miles off the land pipeline will pay for the liquefaction facilities. Ships for transporting LNG should be available. Schedule for an all Alaska facility should be advantageous.

Water Extraction: Pure water production | www.filtsep.com
Implications: The fundamentals in the global water industry will continue to be quite positive for many years ahead. Economic prosperity brings with it severe deterioration of water availability and quality all over the world. Membrane filtration is a proven method to successfully and efficiently improve water quality and companies operating in this space can be expected to meet or exceed the water industry growth rate.

Fill Up With Ethanol? | online.wsj.com
Ethanol as an energy source is not as cost efficient as we think.
Cost of water, fertilizer, transportation, blending and subsidies detract from its attractiveness.
In the long term we cannot produce enough renewable energy to make a signifigant dent in our energy demand.

Gulf oil discovery may be bigger than Alaska's Prudhoe Bay | www.cnn.com
The extended well test only covered 40% of the net pay column, and the results of the remainder are not immediately expected.
The well test indicated 6,000 b/d of oil, but one speculation is that the find may be more gas than oil.
Due to the depth of the water and the total depth of the well, there are acute technical issues both in drilling and production, not to mention significant cost to drill the well(s).
