The European Commission recently published a 125-page Flash Eurobarometer report (#313) based on a Gallup survey of language preferences among internet users in 23 European Union countries. The report charts volumes of data on language preferences by country and demographic segment and provides an excellent reference for information publishers and the language industry. We found the text to be heavy on data but light on analysis, so here are some thoughts that occurred to us while reading it.

Kilgray, the Hungary-based technology vendor responsible for MemoQ, has released a new product called TM Repository with functions for managing translation memory units and databases across multiple projects, vendors, and computer aided translation (CAT) tools. This application does not include its own translation environment. Rather, the system ingests and exports Translation Memory eXchange (TMX) data from other CAT tools, including Kilgray’s own MemoQ.

SDL today announced the acquisition of Calamares, a technology vendor based in the Netherlands with a media asset management solution. The cloud-resident software “allows enterprises to centrally compose, enrich, publish and distribute video and other rich-media assets” and will boost the SDL Tridion product line for web content management. Terms were not disclosed for this tuck-in deal for an early stage company in an emerging category.

Last year we wrote about all the activity of vendors trying to bring TMS in the cloud to market, but progress has been slow. XTM International (previously XML-Intl) announced availability of its XTM Cloud platform based on the new release its translation management system (TMS), XTM version 5.5. The cloud-based system has been in “soft launch” since September 2010 and currently serves approximately 50 LSPs and enterprise clients, plus a similar number of freelance and small group accounts.
