Southern Co. nuclear reactor expansion project at Vogtle is not realistic

Southern Co. has received approval to expand its Vogtle, Georgia reactor plants by two new reactors each with 1,100 MW capacity.  The federal government will provide $8.3 billion in loan guarantees to jump-start the new reactor construction.

Adams Fork Energy’s company Transgas, has contracted with Uhde, a ThyssenKrupp company, to build three 18,000 (bbl/d) coal to liquids (CTL) plants with an estimated project investment of $4 billion per plant.  The project uses the latest cutting edge Uhde gasification PDQ [Prenflow with quench] technology together with ExxonMobil’s methanol to gasoline process (MTL).

The Startup That's Working On a Real Petrochemical Game-Changer

A startup called Siluria has developed catalysts that can convert methane (natural gas) directly and selectively to ethylene. The technology is said to be a vast improvement over the existing MTO (methane to olefins) technology, which is expensive and not very selective. If economically viable, this technology would have a significant impact on both the ethylene industry and stranded gas.
