Hopes for nuclear power to contribute to USA thirsts for noncarbon based baseload power where quietly dead on arrival well before the Japanese earthquake and related nuclear problems. The two reasons are current construction costs of $8000 to $10,000 per kW are uneconomic and no viable alternative for waste fuel disposal. Current enthusiasm for renewables, in light of this disaster, would be better placed on natural gas related power supply.

Following completion and testing of the Miran West-2 well, a major gas discovery in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Heritage Oil estimates the Miran West structure has P90-P50 gross in-place gas volumes of between 6.8-9.1 trillion cubic feet (TCF) with 42-71 MMbbls of condensate and 53-75 MMbbls of oil.The well results have confirmed three additional pay zones within Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic formations, in addition to the pay zone identified in the Upper Cretaceous in the Miran West-1 well.

The Interstate National Gas Association ( INGA) study determined that investments ranging from $130 Billion to $210 Billion in infrastructure were needed through 2030 to allow the successful, and efficient development, and utilization of the vast shale gas reserves in the USA, a key factor in working towards greener energy use, as well as energy independence of foreign supply. But will these investments be made, or if they are, will they be made on time, given current conditions?
