Coal Gasification moves to Center Stage

The nuclear power plant issues presented by the Japanese reactor problems due to a very large earthquake, not foreseen during the plant permitting,  and resulting tsunami flooding and todays mercury restrictions by EPA for coal fired power plants put the coal gasification technology on the front line for filling the power vacuum and also improving transportation fuel developments from coal.  China is leading the gasification trend.

O&GJ reported that PBF (Petroplus, Blackstone and First Reserve Partners) has acquired the 170,000 bbl.d refinery in Toledo, Ohio from Sunoco or $400 million.

O&GJ reports Clean Coal Energy Ltd of Australia plans to supply syngas from an underground coal gasification project to be located at the mine of Farrell Cooper Mining Co.. in Oklahoma.  The customer will be AES for power generation from syngas.

China recognizes value of reversible energy contained in LNG

CNOOC Energy Technology & Services Limited in a JV with Air Products have brought on stream at Putian a 600 tons per day of liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon plant , using the the reversible cold energy contained in LNG.  This is a first in China.
