In the Competition for who has the Most Bandwidth, are We Missing the Point?

January 7, 2011

T-Mobile: We'll match Verizon's LTE speeds with HSPA+ 42 | www.fiercewireless.com

The point should be to focus on applications, but not just any applications. There should be a focus on Valued Added Service (VAS) applications. What VAS applications? Interactive video, augmented reality, and applications that extend social networking to mobile for anytime, anywhere interactivity in a real engaging way. The carriers (especially the tier one carriers, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile) should not be battling over who is faster – they should battle over who has the most compelling applications that just happen to dependent high bandwidth.

Carriers to Outsource more than Core Services

January 4, 2011

Telecommunications Outsourcing On the Rise | seekingalpha.com

The trend for the past few years is for carriers to focus on what they do best, which is run networks. This has caused wireless network operators to outsource even their core radio network, and some cases switching and Value-added Service (VAS) applications, to third parties. This trend will continue through 2011 and beyond as carriers are faced with some significant hurdles to prepare for 4G and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).

Growth in LTE and M2M for AT&T and others

January 4, 2011

AT&T Looks Beyond the iPhone for Growth | online.wsj.com

The advent of 4G via LTE will be a boon for carriers in terms of increased capacity, but they must use it wisely. It is recommended that they focus on new Value-added Service (VAS) applications. It is also recommended that they offer “dialable” VoIP via VoLTE as a competitive response to Google Voice, Skype for Mobile, etc. It is likely that carriers will also focus much attention on Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications and services as P2P is peeking.

More specifically, they can leverage API’s and interfaces into carrier databases to utilize for support in various commerce transactions.
