DineEquity focus goes from Applebees to Ihop

Slumping sales at Ihop made DineEquity focus back on their sister brand as Applebees shows improvement. Applebee's comparable store sales was driven by ongoing marketing and operational initiatives and new menu offerings. Same store sales +4.3% also benefited from the Easter day shift and remained positive for three consecutive quarters. IHOP's domestic system wide same-store sales results dipped 2.7% during the quarter due to lower traffic and failure of the limited time offer promotion.

St. Louis-based Panera Bread Co. reportedly has revealed plans to expand the chain throughout the New England area, according to The Boston Globe. The fast-casual restaurant chain hopes to open approximately 100 new restaurants nationwide, including 28 in New England and 12 in Massachusetts between now and the end of 2011, according to the company. At the start of 2010, the company operated 33 Panera restaurants in the Boston area.

It seems people weren't buying nearly enough fries and drinks to go along with their loss-leader double cheeseburger.Nor, for that matter, were they buying enough of Burger King's premium items. Early this year the chain offered an answer to McDonald's successful Angus Burger-Steakhouse XT, which is larger than the Angus but is priced the same at $3.99. In May it introduced Fire Grilled Ribs, the eight-piece combo-meal version of which costs $8.99 -- a ridiculous price for a ridiculous meal.

Once a leader in the casual dining industry is now a company that is trying to compete in an already cannibalized casual dining segment that gives the consumer many choices when dining out.Chilis' can drive some traffic to their restaurants with coupons and " two for this and two for that ", but they can't continue to do that and their profits not suffer. You also have to look at commodity prices too, and that sometimes can be detrimental to any concept.
