Bangladesh Needs Powering From Both Coal And Gas
February 20, 2010
Bangladesh to set up 1,320 MW joint venture power plant with India | www.individual.com
Power generation in Bangladesh is primarily from natural gas but not from coal due to enriched natural gas reserves in the eastern part of the nation. Coal deposits seem to be poor, and coal-fired plants must be relied on imported coal. From both technical and economical perspectives, to accelerate exploration and development of gas reserves in both onshore and offshore basins sounds more reasonable. Gas-fired power plants need gas for powering.
Bay of Bengal: a potential giant gas-producing province

Oil firms when Bangladesh rights | news.bbc.co.uk
Increased domestic gas demand in Bangladesh has encouraged the new government to further open its offshore exploration areas to international oil players for accessing the large natural gas reserves in both shallow and deep waters. As a world-class hydrocarbon basin, the Bay of Bengal might be a giant gas-producing province after the new rounds of bidding leading by US major ConocoPhillips and Irish independent Tullow.

India's First-Half Steel Output Rises 7% to 24.8 Million Tons | www.bloomberg.com
Steel demand in India will certainly rise at a good pace, above 10 per cent annually, for a few more years. The Indian steel makers correctly see the growth potential of the local market and the captive iron ore as the only two big advantages for them which will hold them up strongly in global competition for many years to come.
Alaska has been an LNG supplier since the 60's - What is new?

Alaska can export LNG to Pacific Rim | today.reuters.com
Liquefaction and pipelines in Alaska address the local desires to keep revenues and jobs in Alaska. Building a pipeline to somewhere in the south, like Valdez is very possible. ROW (Rights of Way, pipeline corridor) are already permitted and mostly available, and the access is available. Knocking off 1,350 miles off the land pipeline will pay for the liquefaction facilities. Ships for transporting LNG should be available. Schedule for an all Alaska facility should be advantageous.

ITC to keep duties on some imported steel | www.chicagotribune.com
US steel industry gains direct benefit from market protection against the major sources of potential over-supply over the next five years. This won't insulate the industry entirely due to a spillover effect. ArcelorMittal illustrates its phenomenal lobbying power and this has to be a success for this company.

GM looks to substitute materials to reduce costs: Purchasing VP calls price increases "scary" and outlines upcoming plans | www.purchasing.com
This "announcement" is not about substitution, it is about upcoming contract negotiations with its steel suppliers, and an attempt to influence the agenda to offset the supplier power of the steel industry. Substitution is occuring, and will continue to occur (even towards steel and aluminium) but it is not fundamentally price-driven and is not a short-term development. Magnesium has potential and is growing in terms of penetration, but price and performance mean that it has a limited role.
Outlook on the global OCTG market
August 22, 2007
OCTG's fall said sparked by China rebate decision | www1.metalbulletin.com
Global OCTG suppliers have witnessed an almost unprecedented bull run over the past three years as surging oil and natural gas prices have resulted in rising investment in energy exploration and production. OCTG consumption growth since 2003 has averaged 15 percent per annum. The pipe must also have greater capabilities and a continuing trend has been witnessed around the globe for higher American Petroleum Institute (API) grades of pipe to be used. The pipes used in deeper wells are likely to require higher tensile strength to cope with the added weight and pressure. Supply growth is expected to exceed demand growth from 2007 onwards, which will apply downward pressure on prices. In the last three years China has gone from a net importer to an exporter of more than 1 million tonnes in 2006. The major producers are adding 1.5 million tpy of capacity in the next 3 years, and these producers are not only increasing volumes, but also moving up the value chain.
Overview about market situation in OCTG market

OCTG's fall said sparked by China rebate decision | www1.metalbulletin.com
Spot prices for oil country tubular goods dropped again this month, with some blaming the decline on China's decision not to reduce export tax rebates on OCTG products. Imports from China continued to soften prices, sources said, with some also blaming high customer inventories and somewhat weaker demand. But with a growing global economy, high oil prices and a healthy rig count, most market sources said they don't expect significant declines in the near future. The average spot price for select OCTG items was $1,390 in June, down 0.6 percent from $1,398 in May and 7.8 percent from $1,507 in June 2006, according to data from Spears & Associates Inc. affiliate Pipe Logix Inc., Santa Fe, N.M.

Stainless steel production to grow further – but at a slower rate | www.worldsteel.org
Strong pressure from customer side to keep the price for stainless products quit stable. Because of high volatile Nickel prices final product prices changes. The substitution of Nickel to the "Ferritic Solution" will lead to less demand of Nickel and the price will decline.
