January 22, 2008
Sprint Looks to Slice | www.thestreet.com
Sprint is in dire straits, with a rapidly eroding core business. This article suggests a complete refocus around their business lines and a move to creating a bold new strategy. A new CEO helps them, as will strategic layoffs, but it is difficult to determine whether they will be able to recover.
To Save their Business, Sprint Must Realign Around the Customer

Sprint surcharges, taxes, fees, and other charges | support.sprint.com
The Sprint-Nextel merger has created an awful mess. There is no doubt in my mind, unfortunately, that Sprint is completely lost in the wireless experience and needs something absolutely dramatic to shake things up. Realigning around the customer experience and bucking the other wireless carriers, as I describe in this article, is an option, and the other option is much riskier.
Google on the iPhone is Vital -- Gmail, Google Reader, Maps -- but Search is Still Weak

Google Announces New iPhone App | www.wirelessweek.com
The iPhone, and Google applications most directly, has greatly increased my usage of and utility with blogs, maps, and podcasts. The new Google application, though "buggy," presents a much improved user experience as I interact with these products and Gmail. However, search is still weak.
Facebook and MySpace: International expansion requires methodically re-creating the network effect

Facebook to launch German version in 2008 | www.telecom.paper.nl
Google's Orkut, a complete failure in the States, has experienced tremendous success in Brazil and in some Asian countries, as has the social shopping sites like OSOYU and ShopStyle in the UK. Facebook and MySpace can create an international "network effect" as well, but, to do so, they will have to be very methodical in seeding the environment with users and addressing cultural differences.

Just How Much Do We Want to Share On Social Networks | online.wsj.com
Social networks, and the contribution of user-generated content and interaction that is at the heart of Web 2.0, will morph over the years as it becomes more embedded into the Web. Vertical networks will become more prominent, replacing the kaleidescope that MySpace and Facebook often portray. As the network effect takes off, the role of super networks, with public profiles, and vertical networks, with private or segmented profiles, will come into play.
Yahoo and Google Put to Unfair Standards in China

Alibaba IPO eclipsed by Yahoo's bad day at Congress | www.news.com
American double-standards are at their height in China, as critics condemn Yahoo and Google's inability to perpetuate the freedoms that we take for granted in the Western world. But Yahoo, Google, Alibaba, and Baidu offer the best opportunity to open up China for new freedoms. Perpetuating the market economy in Asia is the natural road to openness, and Yahoo's best lever sometimes requires concessions and compromises that may not appeal to our American sensibilities.
Apple's $18/month ARPU share with AT&T is Mind-Blowing

The $831 IPhone | bits.blogs.nytimes.com
We all now realize the power of the Apple brand, especially at the negotiating table, but I for one never thought that they could demand such a huge revenue share. By holding AT&T over the proverbial barrel, Apple has sucked the true money pit -- data revenue -- from the carrier's hands and left the carrier with the commodity, voice revenue. This negotiating precedent should have implications in Nokia's negotiations with Vodafone, Google's negotiations with Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and all the rest, plus the other carrier - software combinations.

Disney to enter Japan cellphone market in spring | uk.reuters.com
Disney has seen their own MVNO failure in bright lights, with ESPN and Disney Mobile. They've seen Helio and Amp'd crash-and-burn, and don't be surprised if Kajeet isn't hot on their heels. Apple with their iPhone, Nokia with their OS and handset control - they are the new MVNOs - yet Disney keeps on blindly trying.

Vodafone Signs up for Nokia's Ovi | www.wirelessweek.com
Nokia's partnership with Vodafone, Apple's partnership with AT&T, O2, and others, and Google's partnership with T-Mobile, Sprint Nextel, LG, HTC, and others indeed signals a shift in mobile. Now, there are true players, with software and user interface expertise, delivering the mobile Internet to customers. No longer can the hardware or carriers skate by, and this article briefly addresses the playing field.
Apple iPhone Intro: UK stronger Early Uptake than Germany
November 15, 2007
iPhones poised to hit Britain and Germany | today.reuters.com
Apple iPhone's European entry should be met with success, perhaps somewhat prior to its first price discount, which will likely happen right after the holidays a la AT&T. However, there will be significant differences between the O2 market entry in the UK and the Deutsche Telekom entry in Germany, due to the differences in the marketplace. This article analyzes some of those marketplace differences.
