VMware unveils its cloud OS; Wants to be a bridge for the enterprise | blogs.zdnet.com
The best new feature of VMware v4.0 (dubbed vShphere) is the inclusion of "FT" - Fault Tolerance. Essentially, if a primary server fails, the 2nd "Shadow" server will seamlessly assume the role of the primary server. This means - zero - downtime. There are certain caveats, such as shared storage is required and a high speed link between the 2 servers is assumed, but IF you need true fault tolerance, this is a great idea.

In a down economy, SaaS revenues rise | www.computerworld.com
SaaS represents "hard" cost savings to most businesses. This is particularly true in small to medium organizations where IT management/spending conflicts with the ability to focus on primary business operations.

What technology will businesses purchase in 2009? Most people and firms are concerned about technology spending slowdowns based on current macroeconimic trends. Microsoft Virtualization Products Due In Thirty Days | www.informationweek.com
If you have ever worked with Microsoft’s Virtualization you will then know there is a reason it is free. It does not work very well. VMWare is so far in front of them that it’s not even funny. As long as MS keeps their virtualization technology dependent on their OS I will be skeptical from the get go. Give me a virtualization product that will run on a low over head kernel such as Linux, with out a full blown OS, well I’ll choose that product over MS any day, So will the enterprise customer, so far. I really don’t see MS changing anything anytime soon in the virtualization arena. We are still seeing huge investments into VMWare, but the ROI is well worth it.

I will agree, that a collapse is overkill. But I see a softening of transactions and more projects help up at CFO level and because companies can't hire, and retain talent efficiently. This talent is the hold up of implementing new technologies, none the least is datacenter challenges around power. Wan Opt product realization of layer 4 possible challenges, may change course of companies looking for wan opt done at layer 3 instead.
WAN Optimization Not A Luxury Technology
March 31, 2008
Riverbed Shares Jump on Upbeat Note | biz.yahoo.com
WAN optimization may not be considered a luxury when customers have no choice but to add it to their infrastructure when bandwidth options are limited and response times have eroded. Adding more bandwidth or server power does not solve all latency and performance issues, and optimization becomes the logical pursuit. A great deal of the novelty of the technology has faded as it has become much more familiar technology to IT professionals.
