Carriers rolling out LTE will identify applications, such as video, that add value with LTE. LTE adds significant capacity to carrier networks, allowing carriers to offer broadband services that have been heretofore impractical. One key offering is video.

The advent of 4G via LTE will be a boon for carriers in terms of increased capacity, but they must use it wisely. It is recommended that they focus on new Value-added Service (VAS) applications. It is also recommended that they offer “dialable” VoIP via VoLTE as a competitive response to Google Voice, Skype for Mobile, etc. It is likely that carriers will also focus much attention on Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications and services as P2P is peeking.

It has been a while since TNS acquired the assets from VeriSign for the telecom services division. How have they done so far? Marginal. There are some opportunities to expand existing business and others to use existing assets and relationships for new business opportunities. It is recommended that TNS explore areas that can leverage carrier data. More specifically, they can leverage API’s and interfaces into carrier databases to utilize for support in various commerce transactions.

Last week, The Federal Reserve issued their initial rules regarding the Durbin amendment, which was passed by the US Congress as part of the Dodd-Frank bill in July, 2010. There will be an opportunity for public comment with final rules to be issues in late April 2011. The two areas of the Durbin amendment that were the focus of Fed meeting were how debit interchange rates will be set going forward and also how the network routing exclusivity provision of the bill will be implemented.
