Unicom’s Plight and Outlook

April 12, 2011

Recently, Chang Xiaobing, chairman of China Unicom, predicted 3G would see a “turning point” this year for rapid growth. His reason: smartphone and Internet access are the two main drivers. There is no secret that Unicom is in a better position with WCDMA platform and iPhone. Despite a promising outlook, Chang also suggested that his company could miss the opportunity if it should fail to fill the gap in smartphone and mobile Internet penetration, because rivals may run faster before Unicom.

The Need to Reexamine Semiconductor Chip Manufacturing

April 10, 2011

Is Japan Still a Stable Location for High-Tech Manufacturing? | www.ebnonline.com

As I had noted in my own website back in March 2011, the Japanese earthquake could have long-term impacts on the manufacturing of semiconductor chips in Japan and basically the entire electronics industry. Well, it appears it has all come true.

Social Media - A Terabyte of Knowledge or Noise each day

April 10, 2011

The amount of data that can be gathered by companies on Facebook, twitter, and the many other sources of social media can add up to a terabyte of data a day (and increasing) for companies with even a meager amount of brand recognition. We finally have a source of new information that is like drinking from a fire hose – literally. There is so much information becoming available that all companies are racing to understand and manage this new source of market feedback.

Japanese HDD Companies Experience Component Supply Problems Due to Earthquakes

April 8, 2011

Hitachi GST and Toshiba have indicated that due to electrical part shortages they will be constrained on their ability to ship HDDs. Hitachi has reported that this impacts all their desktop supply lines and it may impact their notebook drives as well. Toshiba is also experiencing critical HDD IC shortages that will limit their ability to build HDDs in the short term. Continuing earthquakes and power issues could make the supply of these components questionable for some time.

LightSquared - Form over Function?

April 1, 2011

The wireless industry has undergone a tremendous amount of change over the past couple of years. We've seen a lot of unexpected functionality, and hype, turn into reality - and quite profitably. Although many players in the wireless echo system have changed, network has been the most resistant. LightSquared appears to be bypassing the requisite checklist for building out a nationwide network. Is this another wave of industry change or just a short-sighted business plan running ahead of itself?

Great chance for some semicondutor companies to gain market share.

April 1, 2011

Because of the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan there are spot shortages developing in the semiconductor supply chain. For the last several years large OEMs have made it very difficult to qualify a new vendor because there was no real part shortage' and many of these companies laid off their component engineers who did these qualifications, leaving only a few for end of quarter emergencies.

Sprint Lobbying Efforts – Outspent by AT&T

March 30, 2011

AT&T Outguns Sprint in Lobbying | online.wsj.com

Well you live and learn. The problem with regulatory budgets is that they are massive and unless you have a specific set of short term and long term objectives in mind, then it is important not to spend the money just for the sake of it. In short, Sprint did not need to spend that kind of money on lobbying in the last few years.
