When Ma Bell ruled the phone lines, most products were developed for businesses first and only later small versions were done for consumers. Today, it is the opposite. Products are built for consumers first and only later developed for businesses. This change is so significant that it will be difficult for even AT&T to stifle creativity.

Lexmark has missed the boat on many fronts; The office products industry has been consolidating rapidly due to oversupply of commodity products offered at incredibly low prices particularly in the low to medium segment. Lexmark does’t have deep financial pockets, secured customer access in new markets particularly in non-US and emerging economies, a credible footprint of managed print services capabilities and captive channels of distribution.

After announcing its Q2 results today, Xerox was trading at $10.22 a share after dropping more than 5% on intensifying competition, slowing industry wide unit volume growth, continued mix shift towards lower-margin services contracts and incremental supply chain costs (particularly in 2Q) related to Japan to pressure near-term results. We are working on a very detailed assessment of the company, trends in the technology business, update on ACS merger and its outlook for 2011.

Seagate and Samsung announced that Seagate would acquire Samsung’s HDD business for $1.38 B. In addition to the HDD business Seagate ensures supply of flash memory for its hybrid HDDs and enterprise storage business. Samsung gets 10% ownership of Seagate and a seat on the board. Samsung also gets HDDs from Seagate to meet its product needs.

The latest earnings reports from IBM, Intel,WMware continue to show strong rebound in IT spending including a shift toward cloud computing and emerging economies.Intel reported revenues of $12.8bn, up 25% on a year ago. Profits of 56 cents a share were up 30 per cent on a year ago and beat expectations of 46 cents.IBM’s revenues rose 8% to $24.6bn and its operating earnings rose 21% to $2.41 a share. But its shares slipped amid concerns for signings of new contracts by its services businesses.

e-commerce continues to expand overseas boosting growth prospects for companies such as ebay and amazon via acquisitions. eBay has agreed to buy Turkey's leading online marketplace in Turkey. Accordingly, eBay today announced that it has agreed to acquire additional shares in GittiGidiyor, the leading online marketplace in Turkey. The deal follows eBay’s acquisition of a minority stake in the company in 2007. Upon closing of the transaction, eBay will own approximately 93% of the outstanding shares of GittiGidiyor. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
