APP BUYS YET ANOTHER N.A. PULP MILL

We had asked the question, "how many is enough" to satisfy APP's appetite for pulp. They had previously purchased 5 N.A. mills. Now their subsidiary Paper Excellence is buying the Pictou, Nova Scotia NBSK mill. A relatively new mill built in the70's it is on the small side - producing only 270,000mt/year. The trees in the mill's "fiber basket" possess slender,, shorter fibers than a typical Canadian conifer. These fibers are ideal for coated paper and smooth/dense UCF for their Chinese mills.

With spot DP from Sateri now priced at $3000 in China, APP chose to purchase the shut Prince Albert Pulp mill in SASK (NBSK) to convert it to dissolving pulp.They had previously bought Meadow Lake BCTMP (328,000mt/year), Howe Sound and MacKenzie (BC) NBSK mills and Woodland, ME NBHK mill (439,000mt/year). All this tonnage is expected to be shipped back to China for APP's 27 paper mills and newly purchased 40 TAD tissue/toweling machines.

Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) is used in disposable hygiene products such as baby diapers. For many years the industry suffered from overcapacity and falling prices. A shortage of the raw material Acrylic Acid caused prices to rise from 2009 to 2011 and increasing demand has led to a ‘sold out’ situation globally. Now new capacity is announced.

Suddenly there are a number of announcements of potential new Acrylic Acid capacity, both from existing producers such as BASF and new entrants in China. Davenport International Associates LLC has identified 1.4 million MT of new capacity, or over 25% of 2011 nameplate capacity, to be added in the next 3 years and available by early 2014.Will the industry repeat the mistakes of earlier cycles and overbuild? Will it be different this time around?
APP On The Move Again-Considering Brazilian Pulp Mill

Asia Pulp & Paper is Brazil's largest customer for BEK. No new production is scheduled to start up before 2013 but then in the period 2013-15 as many as 12.1 million new tons may come on stream. APP, in their Brazilian newsletter and reported in Tissue World is proposing a 500,000mt/year greenfield mill. This pulp will help supply the 40 new TAD tissue machines being installed on the mainland (24) and on Hainan Island (the remaining 16) near their existing pulp mill (3600 tpd)

2 weeks ago, i proposed 3 Scenarios to help investors evaluate the potential impact of the Japan disaster on the chemical industry. Sadly, it appears that the first, Short-term Recovery, now appears unlikely. This means we need to prepare for either a Medium-term Rebuilding Scenario or a Long-term Damage Scenario.

TZ Minerals International Pty Ltd (TZMI) announced that, according to its annual independent in-depth analysis of the global TiO2 sector, the weighted average manufacturing cash cost increased by 2% in 2010, while at the same time sector revenues increased by 28% on a US dollar basis (21% relating to volume increases as demand rebounded). The net result was further improvement in the industry revenue to cash cost (R/C) ratio to 1.29.
Nippon and Mitsubishi Paper Mills Hit Hard by Earthquake

Nippon Paper Group has 10 mills in the quake region. In four mills operations have stopped completely. In one mill two machines have had to shut down. Other mills are operating normally but now there is a problem of getting necessary supplies of chips, chemicals etc.Mitsubishi has three mills - in one case six employees were injured and sent to hospital. All the mills are shut down at present. . At the Hachinohe mill the ground floor is covered with water.
