More hope for Chinese solar and wind power market growth

north american windpower: content / policy watch / renewable energy amendment designed to increase use of renewable energy in china | www.nawindpower.com
A recent change to the Chinese Renewable Energy Law may result in a major boost for the solar and wind industries. Requiring new generation from solar, wind and other green sources to be purchased if available may spur a burst of "build it and they will buy" growth. This new variation will impact the solar and wind industry in China differently, but have global impact to overall growth.
One less excuse to oppose wind power

Berkeley Lab Study Finds No Widespread Impact of Wind Power Projects on Surrounding Residential Property Values in the U.S. | newscenter.lbl.gov
Arguments against renewable energy, especially large scale wind power, range from technical to economic to environmental, often laced with emotion. The arguments are put forth by a fascinating combination of interests who have little in common with each other except fear of change. One of the arguments, loss of property value, should be put to rest in a comprehensive study by a US national laboratory.
Another attempt at US small scale photovoltaic market

Akeena's Andalay Solar Panels Available at Lowe's | www.renewableenergyworld.com
Eighty million US residential rooftops are potential markets for solar energy systems. Installing a tiny fraction annually could equal the entire US market of 2008. Will the latest partnership of a panel maker, system distributor and home improvement superstore be an answer to cracking this market?
Death of German Photovoltaic Market Highly Exaggerated

Photon Magazine survey puts German PV installations as high as 4GW | www.pv-tech.org
Hard times in financing, policy and incentives have crimped the photovoltaic industry accustomed to 30-40% annual growth. Whether the 2009 totals will be lower than 2008, or maybe up a little, remains to be seen. One bright spot has been the continued strength of the German market as fears of a hostile new government slashing support were overblown.
Fossil Fuel Technologies Emphasized in US China Energy Co-operation

U.S.-China Clean Energy Announcements | www.energy.gov
In a joint declaration, President Obama and President Hu of China announced a package of co-operation initiatives on clean energy to deal with the issue of climate change and oil dependance. While the 7 initiatives cover a wide range of actions and technologies from joint R&D, energy efficiency standards, wind, solar, biofuel and electric vehicles development, etc, the major emphasis appears to be on the efficient use of fossil fuel and carbon capture technologies.
Electric Car Makers Urge For Government Subsidies in China
November 3, 2009
Will China Miss Out On Electric Car Investment? | blogs.wsj.com
While China is poised to become the world's largest car market and manufacturer, its strategy to promote electric vehicles as a means to minimize foreign oil dependence has been called into questions. Some analysts even observed that the Government's reluctance to provide subsidies to private purchase of electric vehicles may lead to a miss opportunity for China. What are the possible reasons behind the government's inaction?
Would the hydrate discovery alter China's energy strategy

China: Huge hydrate gas discovery made in Tibet | www.energy-pedia.com
The announcement of hydrate (a form of frozen methane) discovery in Qinghai province aroused quite a bit of attention in China. In view of China's poor natural gas reserve and the increasing role of non-coal based fuel, it is not difficult to see why the Chinese are so excited about the find. As China's energy sources depend heavily on its coal reserve and oil/gas imports, there is speculation that the hydrate discovery may change the supply mix and cause a shift in its energy strategy.

Marsh, Munich RE join forces to offer PV guarantee insurance in Asia, sign NexPower as first client | www.pv-tech.org
Solar photovoltaic panels, if they're made right in the first place, generally have long life spans. But in the analytical world of financing risk, how does an investor judge the strength behind a new technology or company that hasn't been around as long as the warranty term. The best way is to get some insurance and reinsurance muscle behind you as these new entrants are doing.

Biotricity Corporation: “Would you like green electricity?” | www.yourrenewablenews.com
The concept of using bioenergy byproducts for energy generation has been around for as long as shops have thrown sawdust in the stove for winter warmth. The challenge in biofuel powered electricity generation is in cost effective gathering, transport and processing the feedstock, even if it's "free" to pick up. This begs the question though whether this form of electricity generating is compared fairly against other new power plant construction, rather than "grid parity".
US Wind and Solar Markets Become More Statistically Significant
September 3, 2009
Renewable Energy Consumption and Electricity Preliminary Statistics 2008 | www.eia.doe.gov
Getting official statistics from United States based wind and solar power installations has been a challenge, with the Energy Information Agency (EIA) being notoriously slow in reporting emerging technologies. That has led industry observers to resort to a hodgepodge of state, local or private sources subject to varying degrees of accuracy. But the growth of wind and solar is starting to make noticeable headway in the latest annual reports coming out of the EIA.
