China May Be On The Way To Become Major Photovoltaic Consumer

Suntech & China Huadian To Develop 500 MW of Solar Projects, China To Release Solar Subsidies | www.renewableenergyworld.com
China is becoming the world leader in photovoltaic manufacturing, but has lagged considerably in the consumer, installing less than 100 megawatts (MW) a year. This stands to change as this and other announcements portends China's domestic market to reach over 1,000 MW a year sooner, rather than later. This can benefit companies like Suntech, JA Solar, LDK and others.

U.S. Treasury Issues ITC Grant Guidance, More Stimulus Money to Flow to Renewables | www.renewableenergyworld.com
One more bit of good news for the renewable energy industry in the never ending battle to get projects financed and installed. The US Treasury has announced the rules and application process to take advantage of the grant option in lieu of the 30% Investment Tax Credit. It's somewhat cool comfort, as one can't actually submit the application yet, which will likely ice any new solar projects depending on this mechanism for 2009.

BP shuts alternative energy HQ | www.guardian.co.uk
Like waking from a fitful dream, BP's recent announcement of deconstructing their alternative energy program marks the end of an era. This should not be surprising for those who have observed their green activities. It may simply be that their corporate heart wasn't in it.
Small Scale Appears to Be the Next Fast Growing Wind Power Sector

AWEA Small Wind Turbine Market Global Market Study Year Ending 2008 | www.awea.org
The investment world is still enthralled with three of the more visible renewable energy markets - photovoltaic, concentrated solar and large-scale wind power. Meanwhile, there is a whole portfolio of other green power products out there scaling up, like solar water and space heating and small-scale wind turbines. The following is a recent report on the growth of small-scale wind power.

Speculation on Solar Future Hits Overdrive | www.renewableenergyworld.com
People make money investing on anticipation and lose on the least whiff of disappointment. Emerging industries like solar power are especially vulnerable to these extremes. It's important to keep a level head in the long term progression of an industry overdue for a correction and presently buffeted by negativity after a spell of unbridled optimism.
China's foreign investments may target the greentech sector

China Sovereign Fund May Buy Up to 5% of Enel, Stampa Reports | www.bloomberg.com
China Investment Corporation's (CIC) reported intention in buying up to 5% of Italy's largest power utility ENEL for $1.4 billion came at no surprise as China has been known to target the energy sector as a priority in its foreign investment strategy. What makes the news interesting is Stampa's comment on CIC's interest in a significant stake of ENEL's Green Power renewable energy unit. Does that mean CIC would shift its focus to greentech investments? How would the clean energy sector benefit from CIC's investment strategy?
The perfect time to shut down old power plants

Power usage down all over | www.energycentral.com
There present recession exposes business models whose time has passed, such as redundant big box stores built on debt and inefficient car dealerships. Another dinosaur is being exposed, that of aged, inefficient and polluting power plants. The time to get rid of them is now, but do we replace aged battleships with shinier ones, or also change the paradigm to newer, cleaner and more nimble power generators, and a grid and regulatory environment suitable for modern times?

Could Solar power plants spring up at landfill sites? | www.pvworld.com
The idea of combining photovoltaic and landfill gas generating technologies have been around for a while. Declining PV costs, new small-scale LFG generating technology, a need for clean peak power and supportive regulations will enable this important niche market to grow to thousands of MW's.

Chinese Solar Company Plans U.S. Manufacturing Plant | www.renewableenergyjobs.com
The concern that the US PV market will be flooded with Chinese imports is misplaced. Labor is a relatively small cost of making panels, and it's more strategic support that keeps industries going. The growth of the US PV demand will encourage Chinese manufacturing to open production here, just like Japanese auto makers did in the 1990's.

UPDATE 1-FERC clears incentives for ITC's wind line project | www.cnbc.com
Difficult economic conditions may slow wind power's growth in the US in this and next year. But things should pick back up with the next challenge being high voltage transmission in the Great Plains. But the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is weighing in to brush aside that barrier and ensure investment support for high voltage lines and the continuation of growth to the US wind power industry.
