Oil imports and domestic renewable energy - a dubious link

U.S. expects big drop in oil imports | money.cnn.com
Like dogs chasing flashlight beams on the wall, changes in the price of a barrel of oil, and imports, distracts us from greater fundamentals. While US consumption has slipped, it is unclear whether it will translate to less imports. And imports may just not be a causal link for renewable energy, despite the political sloganeering.

Alternative energy ideas power down | www.delawareonline.com
- Current economic conditions have pressured fragile, developing alternative energy product and service providers - Long term demand will remain robust due to regulatory and legislative mandates in this segment - Business leaders in the alternative energy segment have learned to be resilient through starts and stops as the enabling technologies development - A slowdown in the segment may present a unique opportunity for traditional energy companies, sitting on the sidelines the past five years, to acquire or partner with promising alternative energy product and service providers who now find themselves with depressed stock prices
Cut and Run or Delayed Gratification?

Alternative energy ideas power down | www.delawareonline.com
As the alternative energy Charlie Brown runs up to kick the green football, a global recession Lucy Van Pelt snatches it away. The global recession, which triggered a collapse in petroleum prices, has investors in green terrified and the traditional energy ideologues braying. Will these investors stick out what will be a very scary year, or will they cut and run, and set back alternative energy development for another decade?
The Impact of China's Stimulus Package on its Power Sector

China weighs new plans to boost economic growth | hosted.ap.org
While few details of China's $586 billion stimulus plan are known, the debate of social safety net spending verses infrastructure investing continues. What portion of the package is extra appropriation on top of China's existing 5-year plan? What are the implications on China's power sector which is facing challenging times with falling demand? A quick analysis indicates that China's two grid companies are moving quickly to get a slice of the package and tenders for major equipment upgrade may benefit T&D equipment manufacturers

Capital spending cuts delay oil sands projects | www.ogj.com
In the early 1980's Shell and other major oil and gas companies were investing heavily in the Rocky Mountain regions (Colorado for example) exploring for shale oil deposits and developing shale oil processes. Oil prices shifted dramatically and capital expenditures dropped to zero and thousands of engineering and labor positions were eliminated.
Rail and electric sectors to benefit from China’s stimulus planC

China's Stimulus Will Work | online.wsj.com
China’s $586 billion stimulus package includes major infrastructure and social welfare spending in the next two years. Among the priority projects in infrastructure development are high-speed rail and rural electric-grid fortification. While the plan’s objective is to stimulate domestic consumption and assist industry, it should also provide business opportunities for offshore vendors who could offer unique equipment and technology services.
The Trouble with "One Solution" Answers

Power Plays | online.wsj.com
There is an interesting dichotomy in how most Americans, both the public and the leadership, address alternative energy. We mouth the rhetoric of "there's no one answer" to replacing present energy conversion and then are as petulant as a child who got underwear instead of a bicycle for Christmas, when we don't get the one answer. This goes for thin film solar photovoltaic technology. There may be resource limitations, namely scarce trace elements (that's why they are called "trace" elements), that will not allow it to replace all of our energy infrastructure. because it can't do that, it's meaningless. That's the wrong way to think about this potentially huge energy conversion technology, and the wrong way to think about a portfolio of renewable energy applications.
Some Builders May Finally Be Getting Wise On PV

The Sun Shines on Solar | www.housingzone.com
Despite a horrendous housing market, solar powered installations on homes, especially new ones, are becoming a measurable market niche. This trend is being noted in mainstream homebuilder publications like housingzone.com, which has until now treated solar as something way into the future. It remains to be seen how many remaining builders will take advantage of a market that for new US residential construction alone, could reach $1 billion in the next year or so.

Energy security 'more important than climate change' | www.guardian.co.uk
In the Paul Newman movie "The Private War of Harry Frigg", an opening scene has a bunch of generals in a steam room arguing over a map where the enemy is. After a few minutes, the enemy shows up at the door and takes the toweled lot away. So is the argument over what's worse, climate change or energy security. While we quibble, they threaten to merge and crash into our steam room.

U.S. Senate votes to extend solar, R&D tax credits; SEIA applauds move | www.pv-tech.org
Just when you think it's over, and the US solar and wind industries will have to scramble to finish 2008 installations and sweat out 2009 inactivity, Congress has passed fairly close versions of solar and wind power incentives that promise to be at least an adequate patch over to next year, and possibly the beginning of something of a strategic policy. The offshore drilling issue, a major bone of contention to the "Drill, Baby, Drill" crowd, has reached a compromise, which will result in millions of additional acres under lease and also not being exploited.
