The (almost) final phase of demise of Telecom Italia as a top 3 regional telecom leader in South America

June 22, 2009

Telecom Italia starts tender for Argentina stake - report | www.telecompaper.com

The decline of Telecom Italia (TI) as a regional telecom leader in South America began a few years ago as TI began selling most of its in-country wireless operations. The TI Group remained in only two major markets where it had participation in both wireline and wireless segments: Brazil and Argentina. In spite of the board and management declarations from Italy that the group will not sell off in any assets in these two core markets, the moment of truth has arrived when TI had to admit (maybe not verbally / officially) that these two operations are declining as a result of competition and other market forces.

Starent & Friends Do Femo Standards - Just Like Everyone Else

June 18, 2009

Starent Networks, picoChip and Continuous Computing First to Demonstrate 3GPP Standard Iuh Femtocell Interoperability | www.starentnetworks.com

In a continuing attempt to broaden its revenue base (facing limited GSM/WCDMA momentum) Starent has made the femtocell space a strategic focus.  Femtocell standard and interoperability demonstrations highlight its commitment - but do little to actually differentiate the company; every vendor in the market will be ready to follow suit.

The war on Digital Right Management (DRM) between Univision and Grupo Televisa (NYSE:TV) goes to court

June 10, 2009

Univision and Televisa back in court | www.rbr.com

The war between the two North American Latino media giants return to court. It is a new version of an old war about who has the rights to distribute certain licensed content in a certain geographic area. The right of Univision to distribute the Mexican Televisa content via its US Latino broadcast channel is very well defined under the exclusive contract signed between the two media groups several years ago. But the agreement apparently does not cover new types of media that became available in recent years such as broadband Internet, 3G wireless and maybe event the new IPTV platform. It would be impossible to block the access of US based consumers to the Mexican Televisa web site, so Univision is likely to have lost the war even before the court makes its decision on the issue.

NETC Q1 2009 Results & A Forward Look

May 4, 2009

Net Serviços: Resilient in a Tough Lat Am Macro Environment | finance.yahoo.com

Earlier this past week, NETC reported solid Q1 2009 results, which while expected by some, were met despite the worsening of macro conditions in Brazil.  In fact, from all Carlos Slim companies reporting this past week (i.e. AMX, TMX, NETC), NETC arguably had the strongest performance.  Issues going forward: Deteriorating macro environment and mitigating an unfavorable decision by the local regulator.

Nortel & Alvarion: A Logical Move, Another Blow to WiMAX (And Nortel)

February 3, 2009

Nortel Will End Mobile WiMax Business, Venture with Alvarion | online.wsj.com

In the middle of a restructuring, nobody can argue with Nortel's decision to exit the WiMAX space.  Combined with the WiMAX shifts coming out of Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia, the implication for WiMAX is clear.  Combined with a pullback from WCDMA and an LTE strategy that's short on specifics, the implication for Nortel is just as obvious.

Verizon's Network Extender Offers Solid Coverage - And Nothing Else

January 28, 2009

Verizon Wireless to sell $250 femtocell to boost indoor coverage | www.rcrwireless.com

The femtocell services coming out of Sprint and Verizon look similar - both focused on coverage and voice services. The reliance on voice services is logical given subscriber priorities and a lack of inexpensive, dual-mode 2G/3G femtocells.  Verizon's focus on coverage, alone, is nonsensical.

HTC Android vs 3G iPhone

September 22, 2008

'Android' Cellphone to Showcase Google Brand | online.wsj.com

The HTC Android phone will be closely compared with the 3G iPhone.  Most likely the look and feel won't be as sleek as the iPhone.  However, Android phones will have the processing speed that is hard to beat.  In addition, the open handset model features may not initially be impressive.  But as time goes on, when the application development community catches on, there will be some impressive apps coming out...

The Hard Part is Payments

July 15, 2008

Mobile Payment Transactions Will Grow, Research Shows | www.billingworld.com

Whilst the US has seen an explosion in Mobile Banking it is yet to see the users trust the service for Payments. Payments needs to address not just the Banked but the Unbanked, in Africa Vodafone and MTN have  established services that allow micropayments to be made to those that have no Bank Accounts.  The ability to make person-to-person payments is something that sees the service grow. Qualcomms Firethorn service whilst signing a number of contracts is yet to launch.  This service uses a Java Applet rather than SMS and Browser based technology to allow users to access multiple banks rather than a single bank.  This thus should enable a better uptake of Payments rather than Banking Services. The Stakeholders in the Mobile Banking world are moving towards a mobile wallet that uses NFC based technology to allow users to "wave and pay".
